01The basics
The basics.
Where is Big Bend Rentals?
Our basecamp is in Terlingua, Texas, about five minutes from the west entrance to Big Bend National Park. We have run gear, stays, and guided trips out here since 2009.
What do you offer?
Three things: gear and vehicles to rent (4x4s, rafts, kayaks, bikes, and camping kits), places to stay (off-grid cabins, adobe casitas, and vintage Airstreams), and guided trips on the river, the trails, and the backcountry roads.
Do I have to come to you, or can you deliver?
Pick up at the Terlingua basecamp, or get free trailhead delivery on weekly rentals. For stays and guided trips, we tell you exactly where to meet us when you book.
When is the best time to visit?
Fall and spring are peak: cool mornings, clear nights, and prime conditions. Winter is the quiet, best-value season. Summer means hot days, dawn starts, and the best river flows. There is a good trip in every season.
02Rentals and booking
Rentals and booking.
How do day and week rates work?
Every rental lists a day rate, and most list a discounted week rate. You pick your pickup and return dates when you reserve, and we confirm availability and the total.
Is there an age requirement to rent a vehicle?
Yes. The primary driver for any 4x4 or UTV must be at least 25, with a valid license. Gear, boats, bikes, and camping kits have no age requirement beyond a responsible adult on the reservation.
Do I need a deposit?
A refundable deposit holds every vehicle and gear reservation, returned after the gear comes back in good shape. We confirm the amount when you book.
What if the weather turns or I need to cancel?
You get a full refund for cancellations up to seven days before pickup. If the river or the roads close for safety, we will rebook you or refund you, every time.
03Stays
Stays.
What kinds of places can I stay in?
Off-grid cabins, handmade adobe casitas, and restored vintage Airstreams, all a short drive from the park gates. They sleep anywhere from two to six, and each one lists its nightly rate and what is included.
Are the stays really off the grid?
Some are, on purpose. The cabin and the dome run on solar power. The casitas and Airstreams have full power, heat, and air conditioning. Each listing tells you exactly what to expect.
Can I rent gear and a stay together?
Yes, and most people do. Book the stay as your basecamp and add the gear or a guided trip for the days you are out. Tell us your plan and we will line it all up.
Is there cell service or WiFi at the stays?
Service is spotty to nonexistent out here, which is part of the appeal. A few stays have a satellite connection for the essentials, but plan to be mostly offline.
04Guided trips
Guided trips.
Do I need experience to join a guided trip?
No. Every trip lists a difficulty, from easy to strenuous, and our guides match the pace to the group. The dark-sky night and the hot springs paddle are great for first-timers and families; the South Rim hike is a serious day.
What is included in a guided trip?
The guide, the gear, the permits, and the food noted on each trip. You bring sturdy shoes, sun protection, and a willingness to be out all day. We handle the rest, including shuttles where needed.
How far ahead should I book a trip?
The popular trips fill up, especially in peak season. Book as early as you can, and tell us your dates even if you are still planning, so we can hold a spot.
What is the minimum age for guided trips?
It varies by trip. The river floats and dark-sky nights welcome kids; the strenuous hikes and the longer backcountry days have a higher minimum. Each trip notes its requirements, and we are glad to advise.
05The park and planning
The park and planning.
Where do I get gas and supplies?
The last reliable fuel and groceries are in Terlingua and Study Butte, right by our basecamp. Inside the park, fuel is limited and far apart, so top off before you head in.
How much water should I carry?
This is a desert. Plan for at least a gallon per person per day, more if you are active, and never count on finding water out on the trails or roads.
Is there an entrance fee for the park?
Yes. Big Bend National Park charges a separate entrance fee, payable at the gate or online. It is not included in our rentals or stays, though it is bundled into our guided trips.
What is the Leave No Trace ethic you talk about?
Pack out everything you pack in, stay on the trails and roads, and leave the springs, the ruins, and the quiet exactly as you found them. This country stays wild because people keep it that way, and we expect every guest to do their part.
06Contact
Contact.
How quickly will I hear back?
We answer every message within one business day, usually sooner. For a same-day reply, call the basecamp, staffed 7 am to 7 pm every day.
Should I call or use the form?
Either works. Use the contact form for questions, custom trips, and anything that needs detail. Call if your dates are close or you want to talk it through.
Can you plan a custom trip for a group?
We do it all the time. Tell us your group size, your dates, and what you want to do, and we will build a plan that mixes the gear, the stay, and the guided days to fit.
Where exactly do I meet you?
Our basecamp is on Ghost Town Road in Terlingua, five minutes from the west park entrance. We send directions and a pin with every confirmation.
